Review: ‘Taaza Khabar’ revolves around Vasya (Bhuvan Bam), a slumdog who lives in Byculla, South Mumbai. He is in charge of the shauchalaya (toilets) and looks after his adoring mother (Atisha Naik) and his nagging alcoholic father (Vijay Nikam). The story shifts gears when a simple dua (blessing) from a kind deed grants Vasya surreal powers to crack news before it happens in the real world. Together with his closed-knitted people—girlfriend Madhu (Shriya Pilgaokar), best friend Peter (Prathamesh Parab), bakery owner and father-like figure Mehboob Bhai (Deven Bhojani) and Mehboob’s daughter Shazia (Nitya Mathur)—he uses his newfound super-power to master his destiny. Thus, kickstarts the adventurous ride that you don’t mind hopping on.

After their previous collaboration on Bhuvan’s social satirical comedy show ‘Dhindora,’ director Himank Gaur and co-writers Hussain and Abbas Dalal reunite again. The screenplay starts promisingly but quickly becomes predictable, leaving you wondering where it’s all going. However, the protagonist’s journey from an ordinary guy living a shitty life (quite literally!) to becoming a millionaire is quite interesting. Another plus is the dialogue, which is quirky and chuckle-worthy with just the right amount of comedic punches. Overall, this six-part series, with episodes lasting less than 30 minutes, is binge-worthy.

Bhuvan has definitely gamed up his acting skills. He effortlessly brings out Vasya’s vivid emotions on screen. Shriya Pilgaokar lends due support as Madhu, a prostitute with dreams of becoming a fashion designer and Bhuvan’s love interest. They share an endearing on-screen chemistry. Shilpa Shukla, who plays brothel owner Aapa, has a limited role but makes her presence felt. JD Chakravarthy plays a menacing Shetty convincingly. It’s refreshing to see Deven Bhojani in a serious role after such a long gap. The rest of the cast lends good support, though you feel Mahesh Manjrekar seems wasted in the role of Kismat, who runs the betting business.

The show is co-produced by Bhuvan Bam’s BB Ki Vines and Rohit Raj, and the production values are pretty decent. When Vasya’s life turns upside down, the viewers can quickly notice changes in the background, places, and other surroundings.

All said, ‘Taaza Khabar’ is an interesting watch for the way it narrates the everyday life of a simpleton with big dreams. It also reflects how people’s attitudes and behaviours shift when money is involved. The story is relatable to some extent, but it is not entirely believable for obvious reasons. Still, it’s a decent binge-worthy show.
